Honoring Dr. Mary Brunkow

Honoring
Dr. Mary Brunkow

Dr. Mary Brunkow, 2025 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of the immune system. Alongside fellow laureates Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi, Dr. Brunkow identified the molecular "security guards" essential for preventing the body from attacking its own healthy tissues.

Her groundbreaking discovery centered on the FOXP3 gene, the master switch for regulatory T cells (Tregs). By uncovering this genetic blueprint, Dr. Brunkow provided the definitive link between cellular function and autoimmune health. This work has paved the way for revolutionary treatments in organ transplantation, chronic inflammatory diseases, and cancer immunotherapy.

Currently a Distinguished Investigator at the Institute for Systems Biology, Dr. Brunkow continues to lead interdisciplinary research at the intersection of genetics and computational biology.

A portrait of Katie Hafner

Katie Hafner has been writing about women in STEM for more than 30 years.

Her first novel, The Boys, was published in July 2022 and she is currently working on her second. She lives in San Francisco.

A Conversation with Katie Hafner

A Conversation
with Katie Hafner

The evening will feature a special conversation between Dr. Brunkow and Katie Hafner, author, journalist, and co-founder and host of Lost Women of Science, a narrative podcast that illuminates the lives of remarkable female scientists whose stories have been lost to history.

Hafner was on staff for ten years at The New York Times, and is the author of six works of nonfiction covering a range of topics, including the origins of the Internet, computer hackers, German reunification, and the pianist Glenn Gould.

Together, Hafner and Dr. Brunkow will explore women’s leadership in science, alternative pathways to STEM, and the vital importance of inspiring and supporting the next generation of scientists.
